The 12.68Z Stop was designed as a stopgap for the outsized demand for chronographs in the lead up to World War II. It is a very simplified chronograph movement with only a seconds counter that can be stopped, reset to zero, and started again. A version of the 12.68Z Stop was made that had a central minutes counter which Longines technical director Alfred Pfister noted was "A real chronograph" and "much simpler and cheaper to produce than the normal chronographs" in his 1939 report.
